The day that Apple launched App Store in July 2008, a platform was born. 🍎 Few realized its potential in the moment but today, a mere 14 years later, this ecosystem drives 💰 $1.1 Trillion 💰 in developer billings and sales every year and has fundamentally changed consumer behavior. Whatever you need - food, transport, news, education, entertainment, human connection - ‘there’s an app for that’. 📲
Of all the announcements at OpenAI’s Dev Day, the one that caught my attention and captured my imagination the most was the launch of the ✨ GPT Store ✨ that lets anyone build and monetize their custom GPT. I think we’ve seen this film before and we all LOVED the ending. We know what happens when instead of taking a ~10 person product team you become a utility that supports the creativity and hustle of 8 billion people in the world, letting free markets deliver outcomes that customers want. 🌏
It’s been 1 year since ChatGPT took the world by storm but all the use-cases so far seem incremental improvements to the way we’ve always done things. We’re in the phase of retro-fitting existing apps with new tech instead of re-imagining them entirely. We’re in the era of a thousand flashlight apps 🔦 and I can’t wait to see us move beyond that into a whole new way of living with companies that re-think our lives from the ground up, the ubers and doordashs of this age. 📳
The tech optimist in me sees this as a historical tipping point, reminiscent of the App Store's early days. The App Store did not just change what we do with our phones; it changed how we interact with the world. 🤳
With the GPT Store, we aren't just looking at iterative changes but a foundational shift in how we interact with technology. The biggest tech companies of the next decade are just getting started. 🤖
